Concept

Savor the water, the breeze.

In the inland area of Futtsu, Chiba Prefecture, stretches a gentle Satoyama landscape shaped over centuries. Lush mountains, abundant with springs and flowing streams, have long nurtured the Satoyama—the land itself and the lives of its people. Here, nature and people coexist in quiet harmony, and a deep vitality flows through everything.

We welcome you to this land nourished by springs, where you can savor the water and the breeze—a special, harmonious experience found only here. We hope to share with many the gentle richness born of the harmony between nature and people, echoing the generations who have long protected the Satoyama.

This is the vision we’re committed to realizing through every aspect of SATOYAMA TERRACE.

SATOYAMA TERRACE
Initiatives

We seek to offer our guests ever more meaningful experiences—while ensuring that this landscape, in all its richness, is passed on to generations to come. With constant creativity and care, we will continue shaping SATOYAMA TERRACE.

Nestled into the Land

SATOYAMA TERRACE is designed to protect the underground water veins, built in harmony with the land’s natural contours. The main building, set gently into the slope, unfolds in a unique structure defined by many stairways. The guest cabins, too, are arranged across shifting heights, like a traditional Satoyama village.

Designed to Carry the Breeze

The designs of the sweeping, pillarless roof of the main building—a defining symbol of SATOYAMA TERRACE—and the modest cabins were guided by data on the land’s winds, from their directions to their speeds. The buildings themselves serve as natural passages for the breeze, as if they were part of the surrounding hills and fields.

Protecting the Water Veins

The guest cabins rest on foundations that lift them above the earth with piers, rather than covering the ground entirely in concrete. This method preserves the underground water veins and allows the land to breathe. In addition, water-related facilities that place a heavy load on the land are not installed in the guest cabins themselves, but gathered together in a single Water Cabin.

In Harmony with All Living Things

Here, even wild grasses, frogs, and insects are cherished as companions of the Satoyama. Experience the richness of life in harmony with nature, rooted in the vitality of the earth.

Becoming a Satoyama Aglow with Fireflies

In parallel with the architecture, we have been working on Satoyama restoration—reviving ponds and streams while learning from traditional wisdom and methods. But this work has no end. Over five, ten, twenty years and beyond, we will continue to restore the land’s natural vitality, striving for the day when fireflies once more illuminate the Satoyama night.
